Andreas Hedlund, better known as Mr V, is the main composer behind Vintersorg. He’s also active as a vocalist in Borknagar. Furthermore he keeps himself occupied with several other projects, including Waterclime and Cronian. Before the release of Visions From The Spiral Generator (2002) he released several albums under the Vintersorg moniker, like Till Fjälls (1998) and Ödermarkens Son (1999). However, it’s with Visions From The Spiral Generator where he really managed to break new ground.
Aided by Mattias Marklund on guitar, Steve DiGiorgio (Testament, Sadus) on fretless bass and Asgeir Mickelson (Spiral Architect, Borknagar) Andreas Hedlund really managed to bring the music of Vintersorg to the next level. The newfound combination of black metal, folk and progressive rock/metal is aptly demonstrated on the majestic Vem Styr Symmetrin which fuses the collective talent with the brilliant song writing skills of Hedlund himself. A Metaphysical Drama and E.S.P Mirage are two other brilliant examples of what can be achieved with determined musical vision and individual and collective talents to make them a reality.
Spegelsfären and The Explorer show a more progressive and folky side of Vintersorg with even some seventies influences here and there. The diverse vocals performed by Hedlund are another highlight on Visions From The Spiral Generator. His black metal inspired shrieks and his baritone clean vocals are still the distinguishing factor of Vintersorg. The only weaker song on this album comes in the form of A Star-Guided Coronation. It’s not a bad composition but it simply doesn’t have the same level as Vem Styr Symmetrin or A Metaphysical Drama. Trance Locator is the shortest and fastest song on the album and it’s a nice closing composition.
Andreas Hedlund is also responsible for the stunning production of Visions From The Spiral Generator. The sound is crisp so that all the musical wizardry is clearly audible.
Visions Of The Spiral Generator is the album that really got me into Vintersorg. The song writing is simply brilliant and the collective musical prowess of DiGiorgio, Mickelson, Hedlund and Marklund make sure that this record of Vintersorg’s finest moments to date.
