Belgium has their share of musically interesting bands as well. One has only to think of the musical capabilities of groups like Channel Zero, Aborted, Serpent Coil and Oceans Of Sadness. Another worthy band is In-Quest, which got my attention with their Epileptic and The Comatose Quandaries albums. Recently the band released their latest instalment, entitled Made Out Of Negative Matter. Let’s see what matter it’s made of.
On the new album it’s mainly business as usual. In-Quest still combine the grooves and dissonant riffing of Meshuggah, the industrial overtones and madness of Strapping Young Lad/Fear Factory with melodic sensibilities in the vein of At The Gates and Dark Tranquillity. It wouldn’t do the overall quality of Made Out Of Negative Matter justice just to label it as more of the same or say we’ve heard it all before (and better).
One of the striking features on this album is the sheer drive and passion of tracks like Ignition Sequence, Mind Over Matter, Walk Of A Million Mouths, The Auxiliary Theory and Anomaly Of A Tortured Mind. The band have also grown in their technical prowess, which clearly shines through on Made Out Of Negative Matter. Last but not least In-Quest has found the right balance between sonic aggression and well structured compositions.
This time around the band hired Jochem Jacobs (Textures) as producer. Anyone who’s familiar with Textures knows he delivers the goods. He certainly did one hell of a job on this album.
Although In-Quest doesn’t break any new ground on Made Out Of Negative Matter, it’s still a great album. If you’re into bands like Strapping Young Lad, Meshuggah, Textures, Mnemic and Darkane you should give it a try. Nice work!
